Art for Transformation and Peace in the Museum Juan Santa Maria
Art exhibition “Transformation And Peace”
Costa Rica has stood out for being a country that loves peace and order. The country has not had an official army since its abolition in 1949.
It also has strict gun control, ensuring that citizens only have access to a group of weapons for their own defense. Meanwhile, the authorities monitor the borders and the streets for prohibited weapons, which are destroyed after their seizure.
Also weapons that are legal, but that have been used in crimes are confiscated and disarmed piece by piece.
This is with the aim that these weapons will never be used for another calamity ever again.
While the destination of the pieces would usually be a scrap yard or a foundry, a Costa Rican artist had a much better idea, we’ll tell you about it below!
Juan Carlos Chavarría and art for Transformation and Peace
Originally from the city of Alajuela, Juan Carlos is an artist with a long career who has participated in a titular way or as a companion in other art exhibitions around Costa Rica.
Juan Carlos, is an avid pacifist and therefore has always sought that his works relate the need to transform ourselves into a society away from weapons.
A few years ago he had the idea of using these instruments of destruction within his works. The goal is what once caused pain now caused emotions of serenity, reflection and introspection.
The Ministry of Security accepted his idea and donated thousands of pieces of weapons of all kinds, from pistols to rifles. Juan Carlos uses all the pieces, even the screws, creating a unique feeling of reliefs and contrasts in his works.
The works of Juan Carlos Chavarría are not the only ones in this exhibition. Other artists have joined the exhibition with works that seek to generate awareness for the search for peace in our society.
These works will be on display until October 20th at the Juan Santamaria Museum, located in the center of Alajuela. The entrance is completely free.
Mr. Chavarría will also be present most of the time while the exhibit is present. He will very kindly guide you through the rooms, telling anecdotes and data of the exhibited works.
